Sumitomo Electric Stock (5802): Price, Board Talking Points and Outlook
Sumitomo Electric (Sumitomo Electric Industries, TSE: 5802) is a Prime-listed global wire and cable major and a Nikkei 225 constituent. It is the world leader in automotive wiring harnesses, and in 2025–26 it was re-rated as an AI-infrastructure play: optical fiber and interconnects for datacenters, optical-electrical fusion technology, power and submarine cables for the grid build-out, plus compound-semiconductor devices. FY3/2026 delivered record profit with revenue topping ¥5 trillion for the first time. One mechanical fact dominates any read of the chart: a 1-for-4 stock split with a June 30, 2026 record date (effective July 1), so nearly all price memory is pre-split. This page summarizes the board talking points as of July 2026, the business and the AI cycle, and how to read the stock.

Board and community talking points
Themes observed on the Yahoo Finance Japan board as of July 2026:
- "Good news always fades by the open." Confirmed posts vent that a steady stream of positive headlines keeps producing pops that top out at the open rather than a sustained re-rating.
- Fujikura envy. Among Japan's "big three" cable makers (Sumitomo Electric, Furukawa Electric, Fujikura), posters compare the company unfavorably with pure-play AI-fiber favorite Fujikura, arguing profitability lags the revenue scale — a poster's framing, not company disclosure. The handling of the stock split also draws criticism.
- The long-hold bulls. Posts such as "over the medium term, a price in the ¥2,000s is a rounding error" show a patient camp unmoved by the July drop.
- Meta chatter. Reports naming Sumitomo Electric among beneficiaries of Meta's higher AI capex have fed hopeful posts; a specific multi-year supply contract has not been confirmed, so treat that chatter with caution. These are observed board views, not our assessment.
The business and the semiconductor and AI cycle
The company runs five segments — automotive (wiring harnesses, the earnings core), info-communications (optical fiber, cable and devices), environment and energy (power and submarine cables), electronics, and industrial materials — plus compound-semiconductor devices. FY3/2026 (announced May 12, 2026) set records, with revenue above ¥5 trillion for the first time; coverage credits simultaneous expansion in AI communications, power-grid and EV demand. Reports indicate guidance for higher profit and a higher dividend in FY3/2027, with a post-split forecast of ¥39 per share.
The Mid-Term Plan 2028, announced the same day, targets FY2028 revenue of ¥6 trillion, operating profit of ¥600 billion and pre-tax ROIC of 15% or more, backed by about ¥1 trillion of capex over three years including expanded capacity for datacenter optical-communication products. The news flow has stayed dense: progress in optical-electrical fusion for datacenter connectivity (July 9), a subsea-cable initiative with a Scottish transmission operator (July 13), a fivefold expansion of redox-flow battery production (July 16), and a July 14 sector piece framing the AI trade as moving "from computing power to connectivity." On May 25 the president was reported saying tungsten procurement from China has been "completely stopped." On Meta, the company has been named in beneficiary coverage only — no signed supply contract is on record.
How to read the stock
Start with the split: 1-for-4, record date June 30, 2026, effective July 1. The remembered "¥14,000 stock" and today's price are not comparable. The 52-week high is ¥3,712.5 split-adjusted (about ¥14,850 pre-split; the date is reported as around June to early July). The July 17 close of ¥2,249 (down 6.19% that day) sits roughly 39% below that high — a "crash from ¥14,850 to ¥2,249" framing crosses the split and is wrong. Market cap is about ¥7.1 trillion, having briefly topped ¥10 trillion in May 2026; PBR is about 2.55x. The stock set repeated all-time highs in late July 2025 and again in February 2026.
July 17's fall was part of the sector-wide rout (Nikkei down 2,694 points to 64,141). Because automotive remains the revenue core, the stock tends to fall less than pure semiconductor names on AI-unwind days (down 6.2% versus Mitsui Kinzoku's 7.1% on July 17) — but the same mix caps its rating as an AI pure play, which is exactly the board's Fujikura complaint. Bulls see three demand engines (AI datacenters, the grid, autos) plus the mid-term plan's growth capex; bears see the profitability gap and AI-cycle risk. This page sets no price target. The next scheduled catalyst is Q1 earnings on July 31, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. Japan time.
Trading US semiconductor stocks (tokenized) on WEEX
If you follow Sumitomo Electric as an AI-infrastructure story, the center of that theme is US AI and semiconductor names. To own Sumitomo Electric shares themselves, the standard route is a Japanese brokerage account. To trade the US names that express the datacenter theme most directly, you can use WEEX: NVIDIA (NVDA) via futures (leverage, long or short) as well as spot, plus tokenized stocks such as AMDON, MUON, ARMON, INTCON and SNDKON. Tokenized stocks are not the underlying shares; they are tracking instruments that follow the price of the reference stock. See the NVIDIA (NVDA) hub and the WEEX market listings. WEEX offers crypto assets and tokenized US stocks — not Sumitomo Electric or any other Japanese equity, nor any proxy for them.
FAQ
Where can I see Sumitomo Electric's message board?
On the Yahoo Finance Japan board (5802), where retail investors discuss the stock and price.
Why does the price look like it collapsed to a quarter?
Because of the 1-for-4 stock split effective July 1, 2026: four times the shares at a quarter of the per-share price. Holding value did not change on that account.
Why is the stock so talked about?
It was bid to record highs as an AI-infrastructure name, then dropped in July 2026's semiconductor selloff right after the split — leaving boards arguing over both the story and the chart.
When are the next results?
Q1 FY3/2027 earnings are scheduled for July 31, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. Japan time.
What moves the share price?
Datacenter optical and power-cable orders, execution on the Mid-Term Plan 2028, auto demand and the yen, and sector-wide AI and semiconductor flows.
