Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Stock (9104): Price, Board Talking Points and Outlook
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL, TSE: 9104) is Japan's second-largest shipping group after Nippon Yusen (NYK), listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime market. Freight-cycle normalization cut FY3/2026 net profit by 49.9%, and FY3/2027 guidance points to a further decline — yet the company has hardened its dividend, adopting a progressive-dividend policy with a floor of roughly ¥200 a year under its 2026–2030 plan. The Yahoo Finance Japan board is about 85% bullish, trading off falling freight rates against the payout and Middle East risk premia. This page summarizes the board talking points, the state of the business, and how to read the stock as of July 2026.

Board and community talking points
As of July 2026 the sentiment poll reads roughly 85% bullish ("strong buy" 53.85% plus "buy" 30.77%). The observed themes:
- Cycle anxiety. Posts flag that "freight rates have started falling for both bulkers and container ships."
- War-premium speculation. Middle East headlines — including reports of Iran instructing the Houthis to prepare a Red Sea blockade — feed hopes of shipping-demand and rate premia. A company item reported on July 7, 2026 that eight MOL vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz, which the board traded actively.
- Peer envy. "We're getting crushed by NYK" — frustration at underperformance versus Nippon Yusen is a recurring refrain.
- ESG-index selection and shareholder perks. Selection to five ESG-related indices (posted July 18) met mixed shrugs, and the modest shareholder perk draws banter. These are observed board views, not our recommendation.
The business now and what's moving the stock
MOL's strengths lie in LNG carriers and offshore business, with container exposure running through ONE (Ocean Network Express), the joint venture established in 2017. The current president and CEO is Mr. Tamura (田村城太郎). FY3/2026 results (announced April 30, 2026): revenue ¥1.825 trillion (up 2.8%), operating profit ¥127 billion (down 15.8%), ordinary profit ¥175.8 billion (down 58.1%) and net profit ¥213.26 billion (down 49.9%), as container rates normalized after the boom while car carriers and energy transport cushioned the fall. One reading note: in Japanese shipping accounts, equity-method income from ONE sits below operating profit, so operating and ordinary profit are different lines and should never be conflated. FY3/2027 guidance: revenue about ¥2.04 trillion, operating profit ¥105 billion (down 17.3%), ordinary profit ¥145 billion (down 17.5%) and net profit ¥170 billion (down 20.3%).
The centerpiece for shareholders is the dividend. Under Phase 2 (2026–2030) of the BLUE ACTION 2035 plan, MOL adopted a progressive dividend from the fiscal year ending March 2027, designed so the payout "does not fall excessively," with a floor of roughly ¥200 per year. The FY3/2026 dividend was ¥200 (paid), and the FY3/2027 forecast is ¥205. Reports also mention a lift in the total-return ratio from 30% toward 40% and around ¥540 billion of shareholder returns over the plan, though these figures come from press summaries. Note that the progressive dividend is company policy, not a legal guarantee.
How to read the stock
The stock closed at ¥5,609 on July 17, 2026 (up 1.58%), within a 52-week range of ¥4,650–7,325. The forecast yield is 3.65% (¥205 on ¥5,609), forecast P/E 11.3, price-to-book 0.67, market cap about ¥2.04 trillion. Bulls lean on the ~¥200 dividend floor and high-3% yield, the sub-1.0 price-to-book, and the possibility that Middle East escalation lifts freight rates. The cautious side points to falling container and bulk rates, two consecutive years of guided profit declines, the risk that geopolitical premia deflate, and the stock's lag versus NYK that the board itself complains about. This page sets no price target. Watch points: Q1 results (expected late July to early August 2026 — confirm the date on MOL's IR site), Middle East developments, container-rate prints, and any further shareholder-return announcements.

FAQ
Where can I see the MOL message board?
On the Yahoo Finance Japan board (9104) and Minkabu (9104).
Why is MOL so talked about?
Because profits are normalizing downward while the company promises a hardened dividend, and Middle East tensions keep freight-rate speculation alive.
What is the dividend?
¥200 per year paid for FY3/2026 and ¥205 forecast for FY3/2027. The progressive policy sets roughly ¥200 as a floor guideline — a policy, not a guarantee.
What moves the share price?
Container and bulk freight rates, Middle East geopolitics, quarterly results, and shareholder-return news.
When are the next results?
Q1 FY3/2027 results are expected late July to early August 2026; confirm the exact date on MOL's investor-relations site.
