Ethereum EIP-8222 Enhances Validator Privacy, Institutional Staking Faces Cost and Compliance Challenges

Ethereum Improvement Proposal EIP-8222 aims to enhance validator privacy by separating staking deposits from withdrawals through a STARK-based cryptographic mechanism, and re-anonymizing validators to reduce the traceability of their activities. Currently, about one-third of ETH is staked. Thibault Dubuis, Head of Staking and DeFi Products at Sygnum Bank, stated that the current deposit addresses, validators, and withdrawal credentials create visible links, making institutional holdings, entry times, and staking strategies nearly public. The proposal is still in the discussion phase and has no scheduled deployment date yet. The design may involve arrangements such as fixed deposit denominations and asset withdrawal waiting periods, which could lead institutional users to bear higher execution costs, process delays, and compliance work.
