Anthropic's Lobbying Costs in Washington Increase by 26%
Anthropic's federal lobbying expenditures for the second quarter of 2023 reached $1.97 million, marking a 26% increase from the previous quarter. This figure surpasses that of Nvidia and is close to Oracle's lobbying costs. The cumulative lobbying expenses for the first half of the year have exceeded $3.5 million, surpassing last year's total annual spending. This increase follows the U.S. Department of Commerce's demand for Anthropic to suspend services for its AI models, 'Mythos 5' and 'Fable 5'. The department expressed concerns that these models could be misused by military and intelligence agencies in China and Russia, directing Anthropic to block access for overseas users. Lacking technical means, Anthropic temporarily halted services for both models worldwide. Subsequently, Anthropic has strengthened its policy responses and contracted with nine lobbying firms. The competition for lobbying in the AI industry is also intensifying, with OpenAI spending approximately $1.2 million on lobbying in the second quarter. Combined, the lobbying expenses of Anthropic and OpenAI total $3.17 million, and including self-driving company Waymo, the total lobbying costs for the AI sector in the second quarter reached a record high of $4.3 million.
